Lyric Meaning behind Ellie Goulding – Only You
In Ellie
Goulding’s song, Only You, there is a very strong resemblance to this song
being about a man and how he's the only person that can make her feel helpless,
in pain, the line; "only animal I couldn't fight" tells us that
because she is so in love with him, he has complete control over her.
The line "I'm on my knees" is in no way dirty, it's him hurting her and having so much effect on her that she's forced to fall to her knees from the impact of him.

The verse;
Only you can be the aching in my heart
My enemy, the only animal I couldn’t fight
You hold me in the dark when storms arrive, only you
Is saying that she describes this man as an “animal”, he is protective, but he is also threatening, predatory.
The other songs on the album can’t help but convince us that this “animal” motivated their lyrical content too. All of the songs on the album Halcyon are written in the second person, addressed to a “you.” This makes the album more appealing and relatable.
