Ancillary Tasks - Album Advert Deconstruction 1 - Olly Murs

Ancillary Tasks - Conventions of album adverts

Conventions of album adverts

Before I start to think about making an album advert, I need to find out what the main conventions of album adverts were.

·        -  The main image is normally the focal point  on the album advert and should follow the same theme as the digipak cover, sometimes copying it completely. This is usually because the photos will be taken on similar types of photo shoots.

·        -  The digipak/album cover will also have a very similar colour scheme so everyone knows that the two link together.

·        -  Adverts generally have a list that shows what the album includes, sometimes other music artist’s names who feature in songs, other tracks on the album or bonus features.

·       -   Includes the artist’s website address

·       -   It may include the record label

·       -   The album advert might have tour information

·        -  Might tell the reader where you can buy or download the album

·        -  The date of release should be clearly shown

·        -  Sometimes they have positive comments or reviews in a small print at the bottom

·        -  Big bold titles (artists name and song title)

·        - There should be a linking style throughout the whole album advert and digipak

Production - Problems I have encounted

Problems I encountered

During working on my music video production I have had some problems.

-        I originally planned to film my music video during the summer holidays because there are many people that are free as there are no college or school commitments, also because the daylight hours are longer meaning there are many hours that I can film in. However this didn’t go to plan, I filmed half of my music video using one of my friends, Emily; however her family got a late booking cheaper holiday so they went away meaning that I couldn’t film the rest. When we went back to sixth form I did more planning for the music video and me and Emily both got jobs meaning the days and times we could film in were very few, and I wouldn’t be able to film the rest of the footage I needed in this time. I decided to change the actress in my music video, however this meant that I had to do all the makeup and outfits and some of the planning again because it wouldn’t have worked quite the same and this took a lot of time as I was redoing work that I had already done. However because of this, the daylight hours changed and it started to get dark very early, again shortening the amount of time that I had to film. The weather also was quite bad in October, it rained heavily and constantly for nearly the whole month, meaning that I had to film in-between rain showers as my music video is based outside. November was incredibly cold but was bright and dry so I actually re filmed most of the footage that I had filmed in October because it looked better.

-       I have also had some problems with uploading to blogger because I can only upload my work at school and there has been many occasions where my computer has crashed or blogger has crashed or the internet has stopped working, causing some of my work to be uploaded way after I have done it.

Area’s that have gone well

I have finished all the planning for my music video, all I need to do is upload some of my work to blogger. I have also completely finished filming my music video and have started on the editing of my music video.

Production - Reminding myself how to edit

Editing

As I haven’t edited in a while I went on youtube to find a basic editing tutorial so I could remind myself quickly of the basics of editing. After searching around on youtube to find a tutorial I found that this one was the best.

Because I knew that I wanted to change a view of my video clips to fast motion and slow motion, I decided to quickly have a look on youtube to find a tutorial that taught me within a few minutes. I found this video the best.

Prop list and mise en scene notes

Throughout my whole music video I don’t really need many props, for the instrumental parts I need to find a park where I can have my actor and actress laughing and joking with each other, keeping the music video quite casual, I need this as in my instrumentals will be the memories that they had together which will be put into slow motion for more effect.

For the end of the song I also need a fence which I have found, this is because at the end of the song the boy will be sitting on a fence.

Apart from that all I need is a camera and tripod to film with and my actor and actress in the correct outfit and the correct makeup for each scene.

Pre- Production - Ellie Goulding - Only You lyric meanings

Lyric Meaning behind Ellie Goulding – Only You

In Ellie Goulding’s song, Only You, there is a very strong resemblance to this song being about a man and how he's the only person that can make her feel helpless, in pain, the line; "only animal I couldn't fight" tells us that because she is so in love with him, he has complete control over her.

The line "I'm on my knees" is in no way dirty, it's him hurting her and having so much effect on her that she's forced to fall to her knees from the impact of him.

The verse;

Only you can be the aching in my heart
My enemy, the only animal I couldn’t fight
You hold me in the dark when storms arrive, only you

Is saying that she describes this man as an “animal”, he is protective, but he is also threatening, predatory.

The other songs on the album can’t help but convince us that this “animal” motivated their lyrical content too. All of the songs on the album Halcyon are written in the second person, addressed to a “you.” This makes the album more appealing and relatable.

Pre- Production - Timings of each lyric line - Ellie Goulding Only You

These are the timings for each line of the song, this includes the instrumentals. I have done this so that when I am filming, I can quickly look at this piece of paper and I will know where about I am in the song when I'm filming. This will also come in handy with editing so that I know where the lip syncing should be, by using these timings, it will make it easier for me to get the lip syncing correct.
